the red thread + ghostpatrol

blackboard-eggs

These Chalkboard Eggs have made their rounds online a bit but they were just so fitting for the season, we had to bring them to Poppytalk! Hailing from down under, they are made by Lisa Tilse of The Red Thread. They are real ostrich egg shells, with the egg blown out, nesting on handmade nests. Via Free People via Apartment Therapy.

We also love these pencils we just read about on her blog, The Red Thread Blog. Are these not fantastic? From Melbourne's Ghost Patrol, pencils used as a canvas. I would love these framed!

New Art: Civil Disobedience

civildisobedience

My latest purchase by a new favorite Vancouver artist, Gillian Worsley of Civil Disobedience a hand-drawn (amazing) screenprint of Allen Ginsberg from the Blim Main Street Community Market this past Sunday. Gillian also makes some awesome journals and other beautiful prints. Her website isn't updated with those, but you can probably email her for more info.

Also had a delicious cupcake there too! Thanks Lyndsay! The market will run every last sunday of each month!

You are my cup of tea from Present & Correct

This tea print from Present and Correct is a development from their Valentine's card, a print they hoped would be for all year and not just for Valentine's. (You can always tell someone you love them). It features a selection of cups they have in their kitchen and a couple of their favourite biscuits! The teabag at the top has a subtle heart in it, made from the perforations of the bag. The tag line reads, "you are just my cup of tea" and they come in two colourways: pink, grey & gold or green, grey & silver. They measure 11.5"x8.25".

Midcentury colors updated by Rinske Dekkar

Rinske Dekker

This week we’re really gravitating towards retro colours prominent in mid-century art, photography and furniture. Sort of subdued hues of turquoise, pinks and browns but updated with added brights almost fluorescent pinks and blues.

We noticed it first when we came across the work of Dutch painter, Rinske Dekker. Rinske studied at the Academy of Amsterdam to become an art teacher (however she liked art more than teaching, and we're glad she does!) She mainly use acrylics on canvas and her favorite tiny propelling pencil (2b) on paper, she also loves using color pencils. You can read more about Rinske over at Sfgirlbybay as an Unexpected Guest (last year). Her landscapes remind us of The Group of Seven. It’s a beautiful combination how she's added in the bright colors and we hope to see more mixes like this showing up in interiors near us soon! Rins can be contacted through her website, rinskedekker.nl or email her at eksnir[at]hotmail[dot]com.

Grouping and Hanging Affordable Art

This week in our newsetter we mentioned we were going to post about putting more affordable art pieces together, which we have found is not always an easy task (making them all work together). So here we hope to share a few tricks, links to ideas on how to hang them, alternative ideas for frames etc. We'll start out with these beautiful encaustic miniature beeswax paintings by South Carolina-based artist, Katie Runnels. If you visit her shop, The Constant Gatherer you will find a few of these gems left which, as she shows in the above photo, are adorable as a set. We love how she's hung these in a "gallery style" grouping. What's nice about these too is, no frames are needed, which makes for a nice saving we often forget about when buying art.

bueller-and-caplan-group

We love these polk-dot-themed prints and photographs grouped together by two etsy artists and PHM vendors , Michelle Caplan (prints) and Bueller (photographs). These would look great in black RIBBA frames (there's so many sizes to choose from) and black frames create contrasts and put the focus in the room on your pictures. Or in the extra affordable CLIPS (frame with clips) from Ikea which look great against a colored wall. Perfect for a girl's (teenager) room or a nice hall grouping for people like us who love horses and surfing!

mattetrio

These next three just spoke to each other we thought. Matte Stephens is such a favorite of ours and this print titled, Vivienne on her bike has a light humourous feel to it and connects so well we think with the Learning Curve polaroid collage from Trampoline and Talking in Circles letterpress print from Green Chair Press. These all could be framed in white, light wood or darker frames. But personally we like the idea of white.

andrea-shear

Los Angeles-based artist, Andrea Shear has such great colors in her Little Boxes original paintings series which come already included with extended edges of the plaque with hooks, which is such a great feature. Another idea is if you have prints or paintings with similar colors, we love the idea of different colored frames or mattings to compliment them. Ikea has these Fanaholm frames in assorted colors that would work really well for this idea. A link here shows a great example of this.

As far as where pictures should be hung. Really it's entirely up to you of course (whatever makes you happy), but if you are cursed (almost is what it feels like at times) like me (and seek advice), we feel pictures need to be hung (not too high) and not too low - although there are exceptions of course anywhere. If I'm visiting a place where the picture is hung too high or it's crooked or unbalanced I feel cursed, where i, it distracts me to the point sometimes that I loose track of my conversations or there's an urge to walk up and straighten it. So for me in my home, I need that balance and preciseness. Not preciseness where I measure, but precise where they are not too high or two low. I think if you're hanging art above furniture for instance they can be hung somewhat lower if they are larger pieces, perhaps starting even just a few inches up from the furniture itself (4 to 5 inches perhaps) above the furniture line is a good place to start if they are desks, credenzas and dressers. And perhaps a bit higher if it's a couch. If they are smaller then it just depends on how many you are placing together. If you have many and it covers a wide area, then you can start lower. It's just all in balance. Writing this, I'm realizing how crazy I am about all this. So with that said, perhaps I've said enough. Just that pictures really shouldn't be hung above your head (when standing) unless you have a gallery style setting and there are pictures at eye level scattered randomly above and below eye level. I suggest you have fun, invite a friend that enjoys this particular activity as much as you (or even more than you) and make a visit out of it. My family always did that, and I suppose that's where all of this stems, it was fun, we all gave our two cents worth and in the end a beautiful display was created. Anyway, hopefully some of this makes sense and is of some help for those that do seek advice. The best advice is I think to try and hang art so it doesn't look too pre-meditated, yet considered.

For those of you who don't need the advice I welcome your opinions in the comments, as I love new ideas and ways to hang art (especially affordable ways). Other links about alternative ideas for hanging art that we've posted previously for reference are Hanging prints using wooden pant hangers, bull dog clips and check out The Art of the Display posts we've done as well as catch some inspiration from our The Art of the Display flickr group where we found this great display below by Saidos da Concha.

Dolan Geiman Panel Paintings

In my continuation to post about affordable art to use as groupings or sets, I was passing by Dolan Geiman's shop last night and noticed a sweet Cowboy on Horse panel painting (see below). Dolan's Panel Paintings are hand-painted and hand-printed using silkscreen. Though multiples are created in each theme and variations may be subtle, each Panel Painting is one-of-a-kind. And totally affordable. $45. And they actually have a great deal on right now "Buy 2 and save" (1 Panel $45 | 2 Panels $80) or Buy 6 (see above sample set). Click here to go to the main shop and choose a category (on the right hand side, for instance Panel Paintings or Sets and Gifts. There is a vast selection and so many of them mix and match so well, it's easy to create a unique set.

Update: They also have a one day sale happening today which they just blogged about at The Handmade Artist on Dolan's resuced wood constructions.

polaroids + collage = trampoline

trampoline2
trampoline1
Kim from Trampoline originally created her polaroid collages as a way to use her overexposed and underexposed (or expired) film. But what they have become is so much more as she explains, they are "studies in color, hue, texture and nuance. Bits and pieces of everyday life."

These collages are limited edition pieces. They are not prints, but one of a kind, signed and dated. She also will create a custom piece for you, just convo her at her etsy shop.

Honorable Ordinaries by Christine Schmidt

This month's "Student of the Month" at ReForm School is Yellow Owl Workshop's Christine Schmidt. Christine created "Honorable Ordinaries", the concept is taking a fresh look at everyday objects and reexamining them as modern omens. She created a series of 60 miniature paintings with acrylic and pencil on
wood panels. Each work celebrates familiar articles from bomb pops to hi tops with medieval adornment. She also created an exclusive, limited edition print (10 x 13 inches, archival 100% PCW paper, serigraphed by hand) with a design that contrasts the abstract and ornamental. Prints are signed and numbered and come in a handscreened portfolio. Christine is also featured in this month's ReadyMade magazine.
